Most safari pricing is quoted as a total, which makes trips of different lengths impossible to compare. Per night is the number that lets you see what you are actually paying for. Here is what a night costs in Tanzania, worked out from our own published trips rather than from industry averages.
What one night actually includes
On almost every Tanzanian safari, one night covers your accommodation and meals, the vehicle and guide for the day, fuel, and the park fees for wherever you are. Park fees are the part people miss. They are set by the government, they are the same for every operator, and in the northern parks they are a substantial share of the daily cost. That is why nobody can be dramatically cheaper than everybody else without cutting something.
What our own trips work out at
Taking published prices and dividing by nights:
- Camping, southern circuit. Our three-day Mikumi camping safari is $329 per person, which is around $110 a night. This is the genuine budget end.
- Short northern trips. A two-day Tarangire and Manyara trip at $400 is about $200 a night. Short trips carry a higher nightly rate because the fixed costs of getting you out of Arusha are spread over fewer nights.
- Mid-range, longer. Our eight-day mid-range safari at $2,110 works out at roughly $265 a night, and the nine-day safari and Zanzibar combination at $2,370 lands in the same range.
- Northern circuit, five days. Around $1,580 for five days is close to $315 a night, reflecting Serengeti and Ngorongoro fees.
The pattern worth understanding
Two things move the nightly rate more than anything else, and neither is the lodge.
Trip length. Longer trips are cheaper per night. The transfers, the briefing and the first and last days are fixed costs however long you stay.
Which parks. A night in the Serengeti or at Ngorongoro costs more than a night in Mikumi before anyone has chosen a lodge, because the park fees are higher. This is why southern circuit trips look inexpensive next to northern ones of the same standard.
Group size
The vehicle and guide cost the same whether two people or six are in it. Two people travelling privately carry that cost between them; six split it. This is usually the single largest saving available on a private safari, and it is why a family of five often pays less per person than a couple.
What pushes a night above $500
Fly-in camps in the remote Serengeti, small properties with very few rooms, and peak migration dates in the Mara river season. At that level you are paying for exclusivity and location rather than for a better vehicle or a better guide.
How to use this when comparing quotes
Divide every quote by its number of nights before comparing. Then check three things: whether park fees are included, what level the accommodation actually is, and whether the vehicle is private or shared. A quote that is well below the rest has almost always moved one of those three, and the quote itself rarely says which.
