Jozani Chwaka Bay is the only national park on Zanzibar, and the Zanzibar red colobus lives nowhere else on earth. The forest walk takes in the monkeys, the mangrove boardwalk and the crabs working underneath it.

From Jozani it is about half an hour south to Kizimkazi, where Salaam Cave keeps and rehabilitates sea turtles in a natural tidal pool. You can swim with them and feed them seaweed, and the guides explain what the conservation work involves.

The day finishes at Mtende, a small beach under low cliffs on the south-east coast, with a Swahili lunch.
